No – this is a free public service provided by the MacArthur Memorial and the General Douglas MacArthur Foundation.

What does it mean to retire a flag?

Retiring a flag involves properly destroying a worn, faded, or tattered emblem with dignity, rather than throwing it in the trash. Under the U.S. Flag Code, the preferred method of respectful disposal is burning in a ceremony honoring the flag and its service.

How is a flag retired?

The flag is first unfolded, then folded, and then burned in a solemn, respectful ceremony. At the end, ashes are collected and buried in a place of honor.

Can I retire my own flag?

Many modern flags are made of synthetic materials (nylon or polyester) that release toxic fumes when burned. Community drop-off sites are recommended over burning them at home. The MacArthur Memorial and General Douglas MacArthur Foundation retire cotton flags in a traditional ceremony. Synthetic flags will be shipped to a partner organization capable of safely retiring and recycling them.

Can I attend a flag retirement ceremony?

At this time, due to current construction projects, we are not hosting public flag retirements. In the future, we hope to announce dates for you to join us.
